FELICIDADES A TODOS(AS) que han dedicado su tiempo a ser uno(a) más de las "MAMÁS" de Pascuala. Sin nuestro calor y dedicación este mes de vida seguramente no habría sido posible.

Yo creo que difícilmente podré algún día olvidar esa mirada y realmente espero que dentro de unas toneladas, pueda seguir viéndola...

Hoy, 10 de mayo, se cumple un mes de que la cría de orca, llamada "Pascuala", varara en las costas de Nayarit. Un mes desde que las autoridades decidieran recogerla de la playa, trasladarla e intentar salvarla. Un mes de estar "provisionalmente" en el delfinario Dolphin Adventure de Nuevo Vallarta. Un mes de que no se ha decidido qué hacer con la cría, o al menos, que no se ha hecho público cuál será su destino.

A nombre de Grupo Ecologistas de Nayarit, A.C. externo nuestra preocupación por el estado de salud de Pascuala y su posible futuro. Pascuala ha luchado por su vida un mes consecutivo, ante el asombro de todos. Sus habilidades natatorias han mejorado sustancialmente. Pero hace 10 días que no ha aumentado de peso. El 26 de abril llegó a pesar 183 kg. El 30 de abril, 178 kg. Del 3 al 8 de mayo, fluctuó entre 175 y 176 kg, marcando 171 kg el 5 de mayo. Ayer, 9 de mayo, pesó 174 kg y hoy 10 de mayo 176 kg. Considerando que puede haber un error al pesar de +/- 1 kg. por agua retenida en la lona, su peso se ha mantenido igual. Lo normal sería que estuviese ganando de 1 a 1.5 kg diariamente. En el delfinario se está haciendo todo lo humanamente posible por atenderla y brindarle tratamiento, sin tener experiencia previa en este tipo de animales. Los resultados han sido una combinación de experimentar, aplicar conocimientos que se tienen en el cuidado de delfines, buena voluntad y suerte.

Nos preocupa que las autoridades permanezcan en silencio, sobre el cuidado y el futuro de este animal, después de que hayan sido ellas quienes decidieran darle una oportunidad de vida. Nos preocupa la desinformación y las especulaciones sobre su destino. Nuestro compromiso, como asociación civil dedicada a la conservación de la vida, protección de recursos y medio ambiente, es ver por el bienestar del animal. Aclaro que nosotros no tenemos ningún interés económico sobre Pascuala, como pudieran tenerlo los parques acuáticos, que lucran con mamíferos marinos. Pero también debemos señalar que pretender reintroducirla a su hábitat natural en unos meses más, la condenaría a una muerte segura. Se debe de considerar que este animal lactará al menos por un año más, no sabe cazar y procurarse su alimento y que si no tiene la oportunidad de convivir con otros de su especie, jamás sabrá que es una orca. ¿Cómo podría sobrevivir, sin saber comunicarse y comportarse como orca? Las orcas son animales sociales que viven en grupos familiares muy estrechos. ¿De qué manera va a aprender a relacionarse? Ahorita sólo ha tenido trato con humanos (y delfines que la ignoran y la han rechazado). Mantenerla aquí en México, le está negando la oportunidad, en un futuro, de quizá poder contemplar la opción de reintroducirla. En México no hay orcas con las cuales pueda convivir y aprender lo necesario para ser orca. Liberarla en los próximos meses, convertiría en asesinos a las mismas autoridades que le dieron una oportunidad de vida. Por otro lado, pedir que se quede en el estado de Nayarit, sin existir actualmente unas instalaciones adecuadas para ella, es irresponsable. Hay que mencionar también, que el caso de Pascuala ha expuesto los vacíos que existen en las leyes de nuestro país, en esta materia, puesto que nunca se contempló un caso como este. Pascuala no fué capturada, Pascuala fué rescatada.

Considerando que si lo primordial es intentar darle una oportunidad de sobrevivir, (aclarando que esto no está aún garantizado), hay que pensar en darle la mejor oportunidad y calidad de vida posible. Ya sea que vaya a ser reintroducida a su hábitat en un futuro, o permanezca en cautiverio, en este momento lo IMPORTANTE es que reciba la mejor atención posible, en manos de expertos en su manejo y pueda convivir con otras orcas. Solicitamos que se considere la opción de permitirla salir del país, en calidad de préstamo, para que sea atendida donde existan las instalaciones, los conocimientos y experiencia, el personal, y lo más importante, otros ejemplares de su especie; mientras se resuelve cuál será el sitio para su estadía permanente. En ese momento, se traería de vuelta. Esta decisión daría tiempo para que se tomen resoluciones, asesoradas por científicos y expertos en el tema, sin robarle a Pascuala los días y las horas que pueden marcar la diferencia entre vida y muerte.

Today, may 10th, it's one month since "Pascuala" beached in the coasts of Nayarit. One month since authorities decided to pick her up, rescue her, and try to save her. One month of being "provisionally" in the park "Dolphin Adventure" in Nuevo Vallarta. One month and her destiny is still unclear.

On Grupo Ecologistas de Nayarit, A.C. behalf, I want to reveal our concern about Pascuala's health and her possible future. Pascuala has been fighting for her life a whole month, keeping us astonished. Her swimming skills have improved a lot. But since ten days ago, she has not gained weight. On april 26th, she weighed 183 kg. April 30th, 178 kg. From may 3rd - 8th it fluctuated between 175, 176 kg, on may 5th she weighed 171 kg. Yesterday, may 9th, she weighed 174 kg. Today she weighed 176 kg. Considering that a +/- 1 kg error can be caused because of some water retained in the canvas, she has remained in no weight gain. Normal would be a gain of 1 -1.5 kg. daily. In the dolphin park, everything possible is being done to give her treatment and care. Without previous experience with orcas, the results obtained have been a combiantion of experimenting, applying the knowledge on dolphin care, good will and good luck.

We are worried about authorities remaining in silence, about what will be her care in the future, after deciding to give her a chance to survive. We are worried about the misinformation and speculations around of what her destiny will be. Our compromise, as a civil association, commited to life conservation and protection of natural resources, is to look after the animal well-being. It's important to make clear that we don't have any economic interest over Pascuala, as any park that makes a profit with marine mammals may have. But we also must point out that pretending on reintroduce her to her natural environment in a couple of months, will condemn her to a certain death.

It has to be considered that she will be nursing for over a year, she doesn't know how to hunt and get her food and if she never gets a chance to be with other orcas, she will never know she is one. How could she survive, without knowing how to behave as an orca? Orcas are very social animals, with close family ties. How will she learn to communicate and interact? As far now, she has only had contact with humans and dolphins (which tend to ignore and reject her).

Keeping her here in Mexico, its taking away from her the opportunity, to maybe contemplate in the future, the option of releasing. In Mexico there are no other orcas with whom she may interact and learn all needed to be an orca. To release her in the following months, as had been said, will only convert in murders those authorities that once decided to give her a chance of life. Asking for her to stay in Nayarit, without having the proper installations is very irresponsible. Pascuala's case has shown also, the big holes that prevail in the actual laws on this matters, becuase a case like this was never considered. Pascuala wasn't captured, Pascuala was rescued.

Considering that if giving her a chance to survive is the first goal (which is still not a warranty), it has to be a priority to give her the best oportunities and quality of life possible. If she is going to be released, or she will remain captive, in this moment the most IMPORTANT thing it's to give her the best care, in the hands of experts, and give her a chance to be with other orcas. We are asking authorities to consider the option of lettng her go, as a loan (she can be brought back anytime), to where the proper installations exist, knowledge and experience, and the most important: other orcas. This will give time to consider carefully, where she will be or what will be her destiny, analized and based on cientific and experts opinions, without stealing form her crucial days and hours, which can mark the difference between life and death.
